Going to School in Bakersfield, CA
Oil brought people to Bakersfield. In the last two decades of the twentieth century, Bakersfield saw its population explode as people from other areas of the country came to work in the oil industry.
Currently, oil extracting and refining is still a major industry in the city, as is agriculture. To entertain its populace, Bakersfield has extensive cultural offerings, restaurants, shopping opportunities, theater, outdoor recreation, music, art, museums, and much more for the visitor or resident to check out.
One notable feature is the Park at River Walk. This is a 32 acre parcel of land that had been slated for urban development. Progressive leaders in the community rescued the land and turned into a beautiful recreational site.
Bakersfield may depend on oil for now, but they are looking to the future and have diversified their economy. From things as simple as repairing sidewalks using rubber from old California tires to having one of the oldest and largest farm co-ops in the country, the residents of Bakersfield care about the world they live in.
