Recently unemployed and laid off Americans are finding new opportunities, hope and financial optimism in health care careers. The demand is high for patient care jobs such as home health aides, phlebotomists, medical imaging technicians, dental assistants and physician assistants as well as for indirect patient care jobs including pharmacy technician, medical transcriptionist, jobs in medical billing and coding and medical secretary jobs.

In this challenging job market, health care jobs are a stable port in an otherwise turbulent storm. Training for careers in health care is also providing hope for young people who have taken the wrong paths in life and seek to be rehabilitated. The girls at Oregon’s Oak Creek Youth Correctional Facility are being given the opportunity at a new life through a new career as a medical transcriptionist.

The facility, which is home to female juvenile offenders, is now teaching medical transcription courses along with an array of other technical skills and job training courses. The medical transcription course is offered at the facility as a response to a facility wide survey ranking the medical profession as the top area of interest among residents and staff.

The course teaches computer basics, medical terminology and other technical requirements for a health care career as a medical transcriptionist. The girls who complete the medical transcription course will emerge with a clean record and all the skills and knowledge needed for a career in health care.
