The stock market isn’t the only thing fluctuating lately. Staffing demands, salaries and others aspects of jobs in all industries, including those in all health care sectors are also changing.

For example, the demand for registered nurses is now rivaled by demands in other health care careers such as physical and occupational therapy.

As I mentioned in a prior blog, the need for trained individuals in health care jobs in urgent and emergent settings is projected to increase. In this tough economy, people are saving their cash by avoiding regular doctor visits, allowing illnesses to escalate.

With all these opportunities out there, how do you know which health care career is best for you?  Which job or jobs best complements your skills, talents and interests?

Here are some examples to spark your imagination and your research:

Are you a chemistry geek who also enjoys meeting new people and hearing their life stories? Check out a career in phlebotomy. The training is on the light side, comparatively speaking with some of the other careers which means you can join the medical workforce and start reaping the benefits sooner than later. On the slightly less extroverted side but otherwise similar is a career as a pharmacy technician.

Does the business side of health care peak your interest? Do you want to find out how hospitals turn a profit and remain open for patients who need them so much? A career as a health care administrator might scratch that itch to combine health care and business. Did I mention that the pay is on the high side too?

Are you the super organized, detailed oriented type of personality who finds value in being the glue that holds doctor’s offices and hospital units together? Look into a career as a medical secretary. Believe me when I tell you how much health care providers (such as nurses) value the administrators that handle the paperwork, schedule, insurance issues and all the other details that keep patient care flowing smoothly.

Do you see yourself in any of these descriptions? The key in the current job market is flexibility. As you begin researching your health care education, it is wise to look at upcoming career trends so you can make the smartest decision that is the best fit for your interests.
