About San Joaquin Valley College


As an educational institution, San Joaquin Valley College was founded in 1977. Throughout its history, the mission has been to “provide quality educational programs and activities.” To this end, vocational training has always been a primary focus; today, students have access to technological, business, and health related career training. This private junior college is currently located across nine campuses in California, although students of some programs have additional online options.

Fresno, CA Health Care StudentsUtilizing an “Accelerated Training” program, SJVC offers its courses year-round with flexibility in times of day and the location of coursework. Most of the Associate programs can be completed within 15 to 18 months given a full-time course load in this program, including externship and clinical hours. This program is not guaranteed or required.

There are a total of six Associate degrees in health care and medicine offered through SJVC in Fresno: Health Care Administration, Medical Assisting, Dental Assisting, Pharmacy Technician, Surgery Technician, and Veterinary Technician.

Because all these programs end with Associate degrees, they include general education classes (including English, communication, business, and the humanities) as a part of the curriculum.

Health Care Administration (Associate's Degree)

The Health Care Administration program offers training in office management, medical terminology, insurance coding, medical billing, bookkeeping, claims preparation, and basic computer skills. Combined, these subjects give students the ability to work in front offices and in billing departments at hospitals and private clinics.

Clinical and Administrative Medical Assisting (Associate's Degree)

The Clinical and Administrative Medical Assisting program trains medical assistants to work both in an administrative and a clinical capacity. Courses include training in billing, scheduling, coding, giving injections, doing blood and lab work, and CPR. Graduates are eligible to sit for the Registered Medical Assistant exam. This program can also be broken down into one of its constituent parts (Clinical Medical Assisting), with a heavier focus on lab work and patient care.

Dental Assisting (Associate's Degree or Certificate)

Pharmacy Technology Student - San Joaquin Valley CollegeThe Dental Assisting program offers courses in anatomy, radiology, dental science, and direct skills training. Graduates are eligible to sit for the Registered Dental Assistant exam through the State of California Board of Dental Examiners.

Available as an Associate's Degree or Certificate program, this course of study prepares graduates to seek entry-level employment as a Dental Assistant.

Veterinary Technology (Associate's Degree)

An Associate's Degree curriculum, the Veterinary Technician program offers training in becoming a veterinary assistant by utilizing a balance of educational courses and laboratory training.

This program culminates with a hands-on externship, and coursework includes lab protocol, surgical assisting, diagnostic imaging and pharmacology. Veterinary Tech classes also focus on animal patient care, and farm animal medicine.

Surgery Technology (Associate's Degree)

Available at SJVC as an Associate's Degree, the Surgery Technology program is designed to prepare students to seek entry-level employment in this exciting field. Surgery Tech classes include medical terminology, health care ethics, and surgical procedures and techniques, in addition to CPR and other medical techniques. Surgery Tech graduates are eligible to take the National Certification exam for Surgical Technologists.

Pharmacy Technology (Associate's Degree)

An Associate's Degree program, graduates of the Pharmacy Technology program are prepared to seek employment assisting a licensed pharmacist. Pharmacy Tech classes include medication distribution, computers, and prescription processing. Pharmacy Tech graduates at SJVC are qualified to register with the State of California and can sit for the Certified Pharmacy Technician exam.

Faculty & Facilities

Class sizes are kept small, and the school prides itself on a “family-like atmosphere.” Instructors are chosen for their abilities to teach using a hands-on, personal approach, and all facilities are kept up-to-date as far as their technology and equipment go. This particular campus was established in 1985.

Accreditation

SJVC is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. This includes recognition from the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. The Dental Assisting program has further accreditation through the State Board of Dental Examiners, Committee on Dental Auxiliaries, California Department of Consumer Affairs. The Surgical Technology program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

Financial Aid

All students receive a financial aid consultation to learn more about funding options. Those who qualify may be eligible to receive federal and/or state loans and grants.
