Going to School in Gulfport, MS
The second largest city in Mississippi, Gulfport is home to over 71,000 residents. The co-county seat of Harrison County, Gulfport is also the home of the US Navy Seabees.
Heavily damaged by Hurricane Camille on August 17, 1969, history repeated itself in Gulfport in 2005, when Hurricane Katrina devastated much of the city. 16 hours of hurricane-force winds and severe flooding due to a storm surge of over 28 feet left much of the city in ruins.
While the city has experienced catastrophic circumstances, Gulfport has proved its resiliency, undergoing massive restoration efforts. The Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport and the Gulfport Public Library were both heavily damaged during the storm, but today stand as beacons of new life as they are undergoing renovation and reconstruction.
