Going to School in Jersey City, NJ

Situated on the west bank of the Hudson River directly across from lower Manhattan, Jersey City is the second largest city in the state with a population of over 240,000. The city has over 11 miles of waterfront and is a major port of entry. The city is also a major manufacturing center and shipping hub. The city boasts one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse populations in the United States.

Jersey City was originally settled by the Dutch and then by the British. The city has always seen a lot of activity as a port and a manufacturing center. Just like New York, Jersey City has been a settling or starting off point for many immigrants through the centuries. The city experienced serious decline through the 1970s and thousands left the city because of crime and urban blight.

Today, Jersey City is in the midst of a renaissance as many abandoned buildings are being renovated and some large financial companies have relocated from New York to Jersey City since the attacks of September 11, 2001. A much improved transportation system, the gentrification of downtown, the expansion of the waterfront and skyscrapers forming a defined skyline are giving Jersey City renewed life and a unique personality.
