Health Science - Bachelor of Science
Available with concentrations in Nuclear Medicine and Radiography, the Bachelor of Science in Health Science program at South College is designed to provide graduates with a comprehensive health science education. Graduates of this program will be well-prepared to seek employment as a food scientist and technologist, material scientist, and biological scientist/technician.
Upon graduation, students will be able to explain and apply principles of the health sciences, including genomics, anatomy and physiology and pathophysiology, describe concepts of the liberal arts, including the humanities and social sciences, explain and apply principles of the basic sciences, including biology, chemistry and physics, and explain and reconstruct the scientific method and apply this mode of inquiry.
In addition, coursework will instruct students in how to demonstrate leadership and teamwork skills, apply, critique and synthesize the current literature, identify, provide examples, differentiate and integrate principles of the basic and health sciences into scientific investigations, list expectations for professional and ethical behavior of health care providers and organizations, and demonstrate and critique effective written and oral communication skills; formulate and conduct a research methodology, including data collection and analysis.
Medical Assisting - Associate of Science
An Associate of Science program, the Medical Assisting curriculum at South College is designed to prepare graduates for employment as a medical assistant, or in medical laboratories. In addition to learning how to perform clinical and administrative procedures, students of this program will learn how to work in ambulatory settings such as clinics, group practices, and physician's offices.
A blended educational experience, the Associate of Science in Medical Assisting program consists of skills performance assessments, written and practical exams, and a hands-on clinical internship. Upon graduation, students will be well prepared to assist physicians with patient treatment and examination, lab testing, and various clinical and administrative duties.
Physical Therapy Assistant - Associate of Science
The Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) - Associate of Science program at South College is a 24-month course of study. Available in morning and afternoon classes, this curriculum includes coursework in treatment and management of burns, arthritis, back/neck injuries, MS, birth defects, sports and work-related injuries, strokes, amputations, fractures, sprains, and strains.
In addition to learning how to assist the physical therapist, PTA students at South College will also receive instruction in the performance of physical therapy interventions, as determined by the supervising physical therapist.
Pharmaceutical Science - Bachelor of Science
The BS in Pharmaceutical Science program is designed to prepare graduates of South College for entry-level positions in the chemical, pharmaceutical, biomedical or biotechnology industries. In addition to being a good intro to the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree program, the Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Science degree is also a great way to become a biological technician, pharmaceutical sales rep, biological scientist, chemist, material scientist, or food scientist.
Radiography - Associate of Science
Offered as an Associate of Science program, the Radiography curriculum at South College is a multi-faceted degree option. In addition to learning about human relations, ethics, critical thinking, reasoning, and communication, graduates of the Radiography program will discover the importance of being sensitive to the psychological and physical needs of every patient. Learning through both didactic and clinical instruction, the AS in Radiography program is a great way to become a member of a health care team.
Physician Assistant - Master of Health Science
A comprehensive training program, the Master of Health Science - Physician Assistant program at South College includes a 15-month didactic phase and a 12-month generalist clinical learning phase. In addition, rotations in this program include pediatrics, women's health, emergency medicine, surgery, geriatrics, primary care, behavioral science, and internal medicine.
A hands-on program, the Physician Assistant curriculum also consists of structured clinical examinations, clinical laboratory classes, procedure laboratory classes, and clinical simulation assessment. Designed to be the starting point for a career as a health care provider, the Master of Health Science - Physician Assistant program also provides a solid foundation in basic medical science.
Faculty
Faculty members aim to teach students and encourage them to think critically and make good decisions. The commitment to life-long learning is shared throughout South College. Core values include integrity, responsibility, long-term planning and decision making skills.
Facilities
The main campus of South College features a 56,000 square foot facility, with modern classrooms, labs, student center, bookstore, library, and faculty and staff offices. In addition, there is another facility that has classrooms, computer labs, a writing and learning lab, a student center, and a library. This is a 26,000 square foot building, and there are ample areas for study and student lounging. All of this is in a picturesque setting conducive to learning.
