Going to School in Lowell, MA
The city of Lowell has a population in excess of 100,000 and is the fourth largest city in Massachusetts. Situated in the northeastern portion of the state, Lowell was a planned textile manufacturing center and for decades was a thriving industrial center. With the demise of the domestic textile industry Lowell fell on some fairly hard times but has begun to rebound.
Lowell is located at the confluence of the Concord and Merrimack rivers and was purposely built there to take advantage of the power provided by these two significant waterways.
In the mid-19th century Lowell was the second largest city in New England and may well have been the center of the Industrial Revolution in the United States. But the Great Depression hit Lowell particularly hard and saw many of the mills in the city close down.
Lowell was the first city in the United States to be declared a National Historical Park. The Park served as a major turning point in the revitalization of Lowell. Major rehab work began on many of the historical structures attracting more visitors. The creation of the University of Massachusetts at Lowell also spurred development as students arrived to attend the school and stayed to take advantage of the growing technology sector in the area.
The city was originally populated by immigrants and that trend continues. The population is quite diverse and features French-Canadians, Irish-Americans, Southeast Asians and a substantial Puerto Rican community. The result is a city of surprising cultural depth. The city hosts the Lowell Folk Festival which is the largest of its kind in the U.S. There is a minor league hockey team and a farm team associated with the Boston Red Sox.
