About City College
As an educational institution, City College was first started in 1984 as a business training center. Known as Draughon's College of Business, it was an extension of the century-old Draughon's Junior College based out of Kentucky. The Miami campus was opened in 1989 to fill the area's growing need for trained professionals.
The school's motto is “Your Job Tomorrow Is Our Job Today.” As such, training and educational courses are focused on making sure that post-graduation employment is the primary object. To this end, externships and on-site training are utilized as much as possible.
The school offers a total of three degree programs in the health care field: an Associate of Science in Emergency Medical Services, Medical Assisting, and Medical Office Administration (Insurance Billing and Coding).
AS in Medical Assisting
The Medical Assisting program offers training in clinical and administrative skills. In addition to being trained to take a certification exam at the end of the educational course, students are also expected to work a 150-hour externship at approved health care sites (including offices in Internal Medicine, Family Care, and Cardiology as well as various health clinics).
AS in Medical Office Administration - Insurance Billing & Coding
The Medical Office Administration program focuses on the skills and training necessary to work primarily with billing and coding, with an additional emphasis on related administrative skills. Although an externship isn't required, students can choose to include a 90-hour on-site training externship.
AS in Emergency Medical Services
The Emergency Medical Services program is a combination of EMT and Paramedics training given over the course of 21 months. The curriculum is provided in conjunction with the U.S. guidelines for EMT education and includes training in biological, chemical, and hazardous materials. On-site training is provided through local trauma centers, fire departments, and ambulance services.
Faculty & Facilities
The Miami campus is contained within a single building, where all classrooms, laboratories, and administrative offices are located. Physical classrooms are kept fairly small in an attempt to keep class sizes small and enable hands-on learning from the school's trained instructors.
All office equipment and relevant training tools are kept up-to-date with current industry standards. Training – especially in the medical field – is meant to simulate real-world working situations, so computers, transcribers, and billing/coding technologies are modern and relevant.
Accreditation
City College is recognized and accredited to award diplomas and degrees by the United States from the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. It is also licensed through the Commission for Independent Education at the state level.
The Miami location of City College offers exams through the National Center for Competency Testing. This offers graduates in Medical Assisting the option of taking the National Certified Medical Assistant and Phlebotomy exams. Graduates of Medical Office Administration can take the National Certified Insurance and Coding Specialist exam.
Financial Aid
Financial aid is available through City College to those who qualify. Students are encouraged to fill out the FAFSA form and contact the school's financial aid department. Representatives are available to discuss options regarding federal and state loans, grants, and other programs, as well as private loans and scholarships.
City College also offers career services to make post-graduation employment easier to obtain. This includes things like interview arrangement, advice on contacting relevant companies, and job search assistance. In fact, all students are required to register with the school's Director of Career Assistance and Development to aid in finding employment.
