Culture and Life in Mobile, AL
Home to a wide range of cultural influences, the traditions of the Spanish, Creole, French, African, American, British, and Catholic traditions can be felt throughout the city of Mobile. Several events in Mobile showcase these varied influences, including the annual Carnival Celebration. Home to the oldest Mardi Gras celebration in the U.S., the multi-week festival is a popular event for residents and visitors alike.
With over 1 million visitors attending the 2009 Mardi Gras celebration, the celebration includes parades, and other festivities. The Carnival parades begin on January 5, and end on the first day of Lent (at which time the Mardi Gras celebrations begin). Locals use the term "Mardi-Gras" to encompass the celebrations of the entire season.
Sports in Mobile, AL
A variety of sporting events are hosted by the city of Mobile each year, including the annual Senior Bowl, which features the top college seniors in NCAA football. In addition, the GMAC bowl is played at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, as is the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic.
Other annual sporting events in the city include the Azalea Trail Run, which is a 10K marathon run that attracts participants from across the world. The Mobile BayBears (minor league baseball) also play in the city, as does the football team from Mobile University of Southern Alabama. Robert Johnes Golf Trail is a popular golf course in the area, which was recently named as the best par three course in the United States.
