Houston (Northloop), TX Health Care StudentsSanford-Brown Institute is a subsidiary of Career Education Corporation, a private postsecondary education provider established in 1994. Overall, Career Education Corporation operates over 80 different for-profit campuses under a variety of names and trades, including health care, culinary arts, business, design, and technical training.

All programs are designed to be completed in as little as 9 or 20 months (depending on the respective program) and are meant to provide entry-level training. Sanford-Brown Institute is a vocational training facility designed to give students access to entry-level careers in a short amount of time.

The school accomplishes this accelerated pace by offering certificates instead of degrees; they thus avoid general educational classes required by state or city colleges. Classes start on a continual basis, so students may have shorter wait times to begin their vocations.

Surgical Technology (Certificate)

An Certificate program, the Surgical Technology curriculum is designed to equip students with the skills needed in order to seek entry-level employment as a surgical technician. In addition to medical terminology, coursework covers aseptic technique, surgical instrumentation, pharmacology, anatomy, physiology, and surgical procedures. Coursework is a combination of lectures, labs, and clinical components.

Medical Assistant (Certificate)

The Medical Assistant program trains students to work on the clinical and administrative aspects of a medical office or facility. Graduates of this program are eligible to take the Certified Medical Assistant exam and the Registered Medical Assistant exam. Additional fees and/or studying may apply.

Medical Billing & Coding (Certificate)

The Medical Billing and Coding program offers training in the administrative and insurance-centered side of patient care. Graduates may sit for exams through the American Health Information Management Association and the American Association of Professional Coders, but any additional exams require more experience and/or education.

Pharmacy Technology (Certificate)

Preparing graduates to seek entry-level employment as an assistant to a licensed pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technology program at Sanford-Brown is a Certificate program. Training combines lecture, lab, and externship components, and focuses on several key areas vital to the field. Coursework includes the prep and dispensing of medications, setting up/packaging/labeling orders, maintaining patient records, and mixing drugs with parenteral fluids.

Faculty & Facilities

The school's programs are kept up-to-date by utilizing feedback and information from area employers, graduates, and faculty members. Labs are constructed to maximize hands-on learning and are often complemented by unpaid externships in local health care facilities. All facilities, tools, and equipment are meant to emulate the working world and are held to industry standards. In this way, training is as close to the real working environment as possible.

Accreditation

Sanford-Brown Institute is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools and is therefore recognized by the United States Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. This allows the school to accept federal financial aid from students; however, the school lacks regional accreditation, meaning that the transfer of credits to other schools is less likely to apply.

Financial Aid

Financial aid is available through the school to those who qualify. Students are encouraged to talk with the school's financial aid offices to determine which funding sources are available to them and how to secure federal funding, state funding, and/or private loans.
