About American Commercial College
American Commercial College opened its doors in 1957. Originally designed to offer training in business and technology related to the modern workforce in the quickest time possible, the school still offers fast-track career training in the most in-demand fields available.
Located across Texas and Louisiana, there are a total of six campuses currently in operation. The Odessa campus is one of several vocational training options for students interested in the American Commercial name.
This particular campus of American Commercial College was established in 1961. In addition to the health fields, programs are offered for Business Computers, Administrative Assistant, Accounting Specialist, Computer & Electronics Technician, and Data Entry.
Of the programs offered through the Odessa campus, four are related to the health care field. These include the diplomas in Health Information Coding & Billing Technician, Medical Assistant, Medical Office Specialist, and Medical Records Transcriptionist.
Health Information Coding & Billing Technician (Diploma)
The Health Information Coding & Billing Technician course teaches the standard coding practices for work in a medical facility or claims office, with a particular focus on computer skills. It includes basic training in anatomy and physiology, as well as medical vocabulary and administrative skills.
Medical Office Specialist (Diploma) & Medical Records Transcriptionist (Diploma)
Similar to the Health Information Coding & Billing Technician program, the Medical Office Specialist option combines basic billing and coding techniques with general administrative tasks. The Medical Records Transcriptionist course is more specialized, with a focus on the direct skills needed to operate transcription technology and to become familiar with the terms necessary to work in the field.
Medical Assisting (Diploma)
The Medical Assisting program is the school's most popular choice. It trains students to work side-by-side with professionals in providing patient care. It also focuses on the administrative and basic computer skills found in the Coding & Billing program.
It includes an externship to provide hands-on real-world experience. For this program, students are prepped to take the appropriate certification (including that for the National Association for Health Professionals Medical Assisting, phlebotomy, and EKG technician); however, the school does not guarantee a passing rate, and additional fees apply.
Faculty & Facilities
The Odessa campus is comprised of two buildings with over 10,000 square-feet of classroom and administrative space. The facilities were built with career-based training in mind; to this end, laboratories and classrooms are well-equipped for instruction, and regular updates keep the technology modern and in line with real-world working situations.
Accreditation
American Commercial College is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. The Odessa campus is additionally approved by the Texas Workforce Commission.
Financial Aid
As with many similar for-profit schools of this size, there are no testing requirements for admission, and financial aid is based on income and need determined by the FAFSA and federal regulations. Prospective students should contact the financial aid department directly to determine which types of funding options are available and how best to take advantage of them.
