Home to numerous beaches, San Francisco is a beautiful place to live. While Ocean Beach isn't swimmable (the cold water and rip currents make it dangerous), Baker Beach is a great place to enjoy the waterfront beauty of San Francisco, as is the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park.
With over 200 parks located in and around the city, residents and visitors alike enjoy areas such as the Golden Gate Park, which contains the Japanese Tea Garden, San Francisco Botanical Garden, and the Conservatory of Flowers. In addition, Lake Merced is a popular gathering place, as the fresh-water lake is surrounded by parkland and is located in close proximity to the San Francisco Zoo.
Performing Arts in San Francisco
Home to numerous performing arts organizations, San Francisco is home to the San Francisco Ballet, San Francisco Symphony, and the San Francisco Ballet. While the Ware Memorial and Performing Arts Center hosts numerous concerts each year, other popular venues include the War Memorial Opera House, and Davies Symphony Hall.
On the popular music side of things, the Herbst Theatre hosts several eclectic concerts each year, and The Fillmore is a legend in terms of rock venues. Artists such as Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, and several others have shared the stage at The Fillmore, making it a place where several careers have been launched. Other popular venues in town include Beach Blanket Babylon, and The American Conservatory Theater, which has been a fixture in performing arts since the late 1960's.
