About National Holistic Institute
National Holistic Institute has been offering massage therapy education for almost 30 years. All courses are updated according to current industry standards in addition to the feedback offered by graduates and leading employers in the area. NHI has five locations across California: San Jose, San Jose, San Jose, San Jose, and Petaluma.
NHI first opened its doors in 1979. It was founded by Carol Carpenter, a Swedish massage practitioner who ran a successful private practice prior to opening the school.
NHI was her vision of a place to learn all the different techniques from around the world in a single, reputable location. This original location opened in Oakland, and the school has since moved to this San Jose campus and opened additional schools around California.
Massage Therapy Program
The Massage Therapy training course lasts for a total of 720 hours. Coursework includes anatomy, aromatherapy, different types of massage (deep tissue, energy, hot stone, pregnancy, Swedish, Thai, etc.), pathology, and physiology.
In this way, the course combines the Western-based scientific approach to massage with Eastern-based philosophies and techniques. Students are also instructed on client interaction and how to create customized massage programs for individual needs.
The course is rounded off with a hands-on externship experience provided through the NHI Student Clinic. The clinic sees roughly 1,000 clients each month, giving students the opportunity to practice their skills under the supervision of the school's instructors. This externship is required.
Faculty
The faculty at NHI are all considered experts in the field of massage therapy. As professionals, they are required to stay abreast of current techniques, and most work as therapists during their non-school hours. Instruction is almost entirely hands-on, giving students the best educational possible for entering the massage therapy workforce.
Facilities
Located at 3031 Tisch Way, the San Jose campus of NHI is situated in the heart of the Silicon Valley, in close proximity to the popular Santana Row. Because NHI only offers instruction in massage therapy, the school's facilities are designed with just that in mind, so things are kept small and cozy.
Accreditation
The National Holistic Institute was the first massage therapy school in California to achieve national accreditation and to accept federal financial aid. The school is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training.
It is also recognized by the state of California's Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education and licensed to operate by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education. NHI also meets the Massage Therapist standards set forth by the American Massage Therapy Association.
Students who graduate from the NHI massage therapy program may be eligible to sit for the National Certification Exam, enabling them to work throughout the state of California.
Financial Aid
In addition to accepting federal and state financial aid funding sources, NHI offers students assistance through the financial planning department. Most students pay for school through a combination of Pell grants, Stafford loans, work-study employment opportunities, and payment options provided through NHI. Prospective students are encouraged to contact the school directly for more information on the available programs.
