About American Career Institute
American Career Institute is the career-focused branch of American International College, a private liberal arts college located in Springfield. As an educational institution, American International College first opened its doors in 1885 as a French Protestant school.
American Career Institute was not developed until much later as a way to shift from higher-educational degrees to fast-paced career training. It is officially considered part of American International College's School of Continuing and Extended Studies.
American Career Institute has campuses located throughout Massachusetts. In a total of five facilities, there are a combined 38 classrooms. In addition to the health care options, American Career Institute offers coursework in information technology and digital media.
There are three medical-based courses offered through the Springfield campus: Medical Assisting, Medical Coding & Billing, and Personal Trainer. All courses are offered as certificate programs.
Personal Trainer - Certificate
The Personal Trainer course is one of the newest additions to the lineup at American Career Institute. This program prepares graduates to become certified through the state of Massachusetts to work as a personal trainer working directly with clients.
Medical Assisting - Certificate
The Medical Assisting course covers medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, office administration, ethics, and clinical care. Students are also prepared to work with the latest medical technology used in a modern doctor's office. This course includes an externship to provide hands-on experience.
Medical Coding & Billing - Certificate
The Medical Coding & Billing course focuses on the administrative side of working in a doctor's office, including the skills students need to process insurance paperwork. Courses include medical terminology, anatomy, medical billing, insurance, ethics, and industry-standard coding.
This course also includes an off-site externship. Although eligibility and a passing score are not guaranteed, the course is meant to prepare students for certification through the American Academy of Professional Coders CPC and the American Health Information Management Association.
Faculty
Instructors are expected to bring professional experience to the classroom. They are trained to use an adult-focused teaching method so that adult learners are taught in the most time-effective way possible. Hands-on education is stressed, and most programs are complemented by an externship to maximize contact with the working world.
Facilities
This particular campus of American Career Institute is located on the second floor at 365 Cadwell Drive. Classrooms are modern, but the class sizes are kept low in number to facilitate faster and more effective learning. All students have access to the school's online library resources, which contains more than 1200 reference books.
Accreditation
American International College is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. As a branch of the main college, American Career Institute falls under this accreditation, although most of the classes are not transferable to other schools.
Financial Aid
Financial aid may be available to students who qualify. American Career Institute offers the guidance of an admissions counselor prior to signing up for classes; this counselor will be able to provide further information on funding options through federal and state programs, as well as American Career Institute-based payment plans.
