Health Care Student in Tampa, FloridaSouth University first opened its doors in 1899 in Savannah, Georgia as Draughon's Practical Business College. In its original form, it offered business training to area students and adult learners.

It wasn't until the 1970s that the school really began to grow and incorporate additional fields of study, including the popular health care options and advanced degrees.

The Tampa location is the most recent addition, and it was in 2007 that the addition of online courses and programs allowed students from a number of locations to participate in the school.

The Tampa location of South University offers a Bachelor degree in Health Science or Health Care Management, and an Associate degree in Physical Therapy Assisting.

Bachelor of Science in Health Science

The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Health Science offers a combination of health care education with business training. Graduates are trained to seek administrative and managerial-level employment in hospitals, private practices, clinics, nursing care facilities, government agencies, insurance companies, and other medical firms.

As with most of South University's Bachelor-level programs, Health Science is offered as a four-year program. For the first two years, students focus on core curriculum classes in humanities, communication, math, and science. The second two years are spent in courses dealing with business, health care systems, and public health administration.

Bachelor of Science in Health Care Management

A new degree program, the BS in Health Care Management program at South University combines classroom teaching with the real-world experience of a health care externship. In addition to the externship program (which may be offered at facilities such as a hospital, nursing home, physician's office or pharmaceutical company), coursework in this program includes accounting, ethics, leaderships, finance, and management.

Associate of Science in Physical Therapy Assisting

The Physical Therapist Assisting program is an Associate-level course. This two-year program trains students to work alongside physical therapists in caring for patients. Coursework includes a combination of general education studies, laboratory work, anatomy and physiology, and clinical work. Students are also required to participate in an externship in an off-site physical therapy location.
