Wilmington was incorporated as a town in 1739. The first settlers included those from England, Barbados, and South Carolina. Slavery was a major part of the economy from early on in the town’s history, and the main industry was natural resources, including naval stores and lumber.
Some of Wilmington’s antebellum buildings and homes are intact and have helped to make the city a tourist and history-buff destination.
Today, tourism is a major industry as visitors are drawn to the comfortable climate, the historical sites, shopping, museums, galleries, performing arts venues, and more.
