Nurse Assistant
The field of nursing assistants is growing. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, "overall employment of nursing and psychiatric aides is projected to grow 18 percent between 2008 and 2018, faster than the average for all occupations. However, growth will vary for individual occupations. Employment for nursing aides, orderlies, and attendants will grow 19 percent, faster than the average for all occupations, predominantly in response to the long-term care needs of an increasing elderly population."
Nurse assistants can develop good patient relationships and provide aspects of health care that are vital to patients. Duties include dressing and bathing patients, turning bedridden patients, addressing patients’ fears and explaining procedures, observing patient health, and more.
An added benefit to becoming a nurse assistant is that it leaves the door wide open if you later want to become a vocational nurse or registered nurse.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED. Students without a diploma or GED may be eligible for admission after completing an Ability to Benefit (ATB) test, administered by a third party.
